Last weekend was our local Hometown days celebration in town, of course that means rides, activities and other attractions. So we took in some of the events that were going on, like the rides and a game or two. Syd just had to play the old stand by game of winning a goldfish and she did just that won a goldfish. Thankfully, I think, Evan had won a goldfish a couple of years ago so we had bought a small fish bowl, rocks and food for the fish. Evan's fish didn't survive very long tho and now I know why.
This morning Syd's fish "nibbles" was swimming around the top of the water, as Syd says "smelling the bubbles," I think that those bubbles were eggs and "she" was eating them. So of course I had to get online and find out exactly what was going on.
Indeed little nibbles had layed eggs, unfortunately nibbles is not in a bowl with a male goldfish to fertilize her eggs. Research states that even after the fertilization of the eggs the goldfish will eat their eggs anyway, the only way to save the eggs after fertilization is to remove them from the tank. Poor little Momma nibbles has no way of bringing her babies to life, how sad.
I also read that goldfish won't survive in small bowls for very long and that they need at least 5 gallons to 10 gallons (per fish) in order for them to thrive. So I'm basically killing this goldfish slowly. I'm starting to feel very sad for little white and orange nibbles. At the same time I'm not interested in buying a larger tank. Anyone want a fish?
Some comments Syd has made about her Nibbles:
"My fishie needs a family"
"My fishie is so cute"
After we put her in a bowl she put her arms around the bowl and said "I love you fishie"
"what is that long thing hanging from its butt"
"It's freaking out"
